Foreword
Coke Oven By-product
Plant (COBP) is an important unit attached to coke ovens in an Integrated
Iron and Steel Industry. The purpose of COBP plant is to clean the
coke oven gas to use it as fuel and to recover valuable by-products
such as tar, ammonia, naphthalene and benzol compounds. Wastewater
generated during the process of cleaning the coke-oven gases is
toxic in nature due to presence of high phenol, ammonia, thiocyanate
and cyanide. This wastewater is commonly treated using biological
methods of treatment. In steel industry, these treatment plants
are known as Biochemical Oxidation and Dephenolisation Plants (BOD
Plants) which have two or three stage of biological treatment units.
However, functioning of these BOD plants is often affected due to
high inlet concentrations, biodegradability and improper operational
control.

The
findings of performance study in BOD plants of four steel plants in
eastern India are presented in this report. Based on the study, suggestions
have been made for different unit operations. The report also contains
some general recommendations for improvement in performance of BOD
plant and areas of concern which require further investigations.
This report is prepared by our Eastern Zonal office located in Calcutta.
I appreciate the efforts made by my colleagues Dr. B. Sengupta, Sh.
B.R. Naidu, Sh. B. Vinod Babu and Sh. Sundeep. I express my sincere
thanks to Sh. G.S. Ray for editing this report. I also thankfully
acknowledge the support of industry personnel associated during this
study.
I hope, the report will be useful to industry, consultants, academic
institutions, R&D organizations and regulatory authorities. |
