Foreword

Aircrafts constitute a major source of noise particularly during take-off and landing. Ideally / the airports should be away from human habitation so that people are not affected by thr deafening noise caused by air traffic. However/ this is not the case in several are as where the human settlements have sprung up in close proximity of airports. People who live away from airports but within the air traffic route are also disturbed by high noise levels specially during the night hours.

To determine the extent of noise caused by air traffic, a study was taken up by the CPCB team in and around Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. T.he report also looks into the existing practices and possibilities to combat noise pollution.
