State of Environment Jammu City

                                                Foreword
Our water, air, soil, landscape, flora and fauna are the endowments of nature for sustaining life on earth and these are closely interlinked. Once such links are destroyed, our survival on this planet will be at stake. The Pollution Control Acts are mostly dealing with the control of pollution in the industries or for controlling other polluting sources. So far, not much of work has been done for controlling urban environmental degradation in its various facets. Now, the concept has changed and it is recognised that we need to assess area-wise state of the environment so that an integrated approach for prevention and control of pollution as well as other measures for environmental improvement could be taken.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has taken up programmes for preparing city wise state of the environment reports. This report is the Ist phase of such comprehensive assessment covering the state of environment in Jammu city , which will be followed by a separate report on Srinagar. The J&K PCB has already taken up the modalities for that purpose. The data so generated shall prove to be a bench mark data for future environmental monitoring of the state J&K. .

I acknowledge the painstaking efforts taken by my colleagues at our Kanpur zonal office participating its Zonal Officer, Sh. B.P. Shukla and Scientist, Dr. D. Saha for preparing this report. I also express my sincere thanks to the Chairman, J & K Pollution Control Board and his staff for the support extended by tham during the investigation and study.
