An
Inventory of Major Polluting Industries in Ganga Basin & their
Pollution Control Status
|
|
Foreword
In pursuance of the Water (Prevention
and Control of pollution) Act, 1974 and the Air (Prevention and
Control of Pollution) Act, 19811 the industries are required to
install requisite pollution control systems to comply with the prescribed
norms. However, barring some exceptions, the compliance has been
sporadic and inadequate. For a concerted drive throughout the country,
certain categories of highly polluting industries were identified
and time frames were stipulated for installation of pollution control
systems in such units. I mplementation of the programme was periodically
monitored through the State Boards and through field visits in some
cases.
Based on the data collected from various parts of the courtry ,
a status report as on June 1 , 1995 has been separately prepared
.The present report provides an inventory and status of pollution
control in the identified categories of industrial units in the
Ganga basin.

The details of the industrial pollution control programme along the
river Ganga, its implementation process, progress profile, and the
status as on January 31, 1995 have been compiled in this document.
I would like to acknowledge the cooperation received from the concerned
State Boards in monitoring and transmittal of the information. I would
also like to thank Dr. Virendra Vats of the National River Conservation
Directorate (Ministry of Environment & Forests) and my colleagues
in CPCB for their team work in preparation of this document.
We trust, the document will be useful to all those concerned with
prevention of pollution in the river Ganga. |
