Implementation
Status of the Pollution Control Programme (Phase -I) Along the
River Ganga
|
|
Foreword
To ascertain the sources and extent of
pollution in the river stretches, river basin-wise surveys were
initiate<;l by the Central Pollution Control Board \ (CPCB) in the
early SO's. The findings of such surveys in the Ganga basin formed
the basis for launching the Ganga Action Plan (GAP).. Apart from
interception of municipal waste water in selected cities/towns,
concurrent steps for installation of effluent treatment plants in
the 68 grossly polluting industrial units along the river were identified
as priority for the Ganga Action plan.
CPCB has been monitoring the follow-up action through on-site inspection
and in-depth studies in the identified industrial units. From time
to time, the status has been reviewed and brought to the attention
of concerned authorities for necessary action. As a result of such
exercise, all the units, which are now in operation, have installed
the effluent treatment plants.

The details of the industrial pollution control programme along the
river Ganga, its implementation process, progress profile, and the
status as on January 31, 1995 have been compiled in this document.
I would like to acknowledge the cooperation received from the concerned
State Boards in monitoring and transmittal of the information. I would
also like to thank Dr. Virendra Vats of the National River Conservation
Directorate (Ministry of Environment & Forests) and my colleagues
in CPCB for their team work in preparation of this document.
We trust, the document will be useful to all those concerned with
prevention of pollution in the river Ganga. |
