Report of the Expert Group on Utilization of Fly Ash in Cement Industry

                                                Foreword
Flyash is an inescapable solid waste generated in enonnous quantity from coal based power plants, which is dumped in the lagoons in the slurry fonn. The generation and disposal of tlyash lead to various types of pollution problems. Emission of tlyash from stacks causes air pollution and when dumped into lagoons it causes water pollution. The present disposal practice requires large area; as a result a large part of land is wasted.

Some research organisations like the Central Fuel Research Institute (CFRI) and the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) have developed technologies for utilisation of flyash in brick manufacturing and aggregates. In the recent past many new areas have been explored forutilisation of flyash notably in cement manufacturing industries and as a fertiliser in farming etc.
To promote utilisation of flyash in cement manufacturing, the Central Pollution Control Board set up an Expert Group under the Chairmanship of Shri D. S. Tiwari, Ex-Chairman, Madhya Pradesh

Pollution Control Board. This Group has reviewed the existing status and recommended various possibility for utilisation of flyash.

The contribution made by Sh. D. S. Tiwari, Chairman of the expert group, and members of his team, is gratefully acknowledged. Dr. B. Sengupta, Senior Scientist, coordinated with the expert group activities. Sh.P .KGupta ,AEE, and Sh.A.KChaturvedi, AEE, organised the meetings of the exprt group and prepared the draft report. Ms. Meena, and Sh. Umesh Gupta, Stenographers, typed the manuscript.

We hope that this report will be useful to the Cement Industry, Thermal Power Plants, the regulatory agencies and others concerned .
