Retting of Jute Fibre - Its Impact on Environment

                                                Foreword
Extraction of jute from jute plants is manually carried out at the cultivation sites itself in the villages. The retting of jute plant in water is a pre-requisite for the extraction of jute. Although the phenomenon is fairly well known, there has not been any systematic study in the field to determine the extent of pollution the water is subjected to, and the extent to which the environmental in the neighbourhood is affected. This study intends to bridge this knowledge gap.

This document is based on the study report prepared by the Consulting Engineers Consortium, Calcutta.

It is hoped that this document will .prove useful to the State Pollution Control Boards, Agriculture Departments, jute growers, Research Organisations and others concerned with jute retting and jute industry..
