Foreword

Pilgrimage to religious places is an old tradition in Indian culture. Large number of pilgrims visiting religious places require basic facilities like safe drinking water and good sanitary facilities. Besides, adequate arrangements need to be made by the concerned administration for their stay and transport in addition to taking care of health related issues. Co-ordinated efforts are required in particular, during special occasions, to ensure that religious places are well maintained. It has been observed that we do not have well documented guidelines for maintaining good environmental conditions at such places. Against this background, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) made an attempt to prepare guidelines for the benefit of local authorities to formulate action plans. These guidelines

have been drafted based on studies sponsored by CPCB to the Pollution Control Research Institute (PCRI). PCRI has conducted field surveys at ten religious places and detailed environmental studies at two religious places. The study has been co-ordinated by Dr.B.Sengupta, Member Secretary, Dr.A.B.Akolkar, Additional Director and Sh.A.K. Vidyarthi, AEE of CPCB.

It is hoped that the present document would be helpful to the concerned agencies in formulating detailed action plans/ strategies for maintaining cleanliness and good environmental conditions at religious places.
