Indcative Operational Guidelines On Construction Of Polymer - Bitumen Roads

Foreword

Waste plastics are available in plenty. It is observed that these polymers undergo softening between 100 to 140°C The softened plastic has a binding property. When the molten plastics are mixed with granite aggregate and compacted, they form a hard mass with very high compressive and flexural strength. Use of these materials in flexible road construction can help in many ways including easy disposal of plastics waste, better road strength, prevention of pollution and bitumen resource conservation. Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai has undertaken this collaborative study for compilation of the information and prepared "Indicative Operational Guidelines on Construction of Polymer -Bitumen Roads".

I am thankful to Dr. Abhai Kumar, Principal, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai for his dynamic support in carrying out the project Special thanks are also due to Dr. R. Vasudevan, Head, Department of Chemistry, Thiagarajar College of Engineering, Madurai for his leadership quality and successful and timely completion of
the project.

I am thankful to my colleagues Dr. S. K. Nigam, Scientist "C", Dr A. B. Akolkar, Addl Director, Sh. T. Venugopal, Director and Dr. B Sengupta, Member Secretary for their valued contribution in the completion of the project and publishing this document. This document may be useful to Municipal Corporations, Developmental Authorities and other Civic Authorities for disposal as well as reusing of plastics waste in road construction.
