Status of Silk Screen Printing at Serampore, West Bengal

Dyeing
of cloth is done to improve the aesthetic and functional values of the fabric.
More precisely, the use of Dye, both in terms of variety and quantity depends
on the specific requirements of the fashion designers and is being increased day
by day. The drainage of the unused/excess dye of the cloth during washing causes
nuisance.
Serampore in the Hooghly district of West Bengal is famous for
its Silk screen Printing Units and is being running atleast for a Century. More
than 100 units of various sizes are operating in and around the area.
Being
small units, there is no Effluent Treatment Plant till |

date, and all the Units are practically discharging their untreated
coloured effluent to the nearby nallahs or open fields/low
lying areas and have worsened the condition of the drains and lands. Moreover,
in almost all the years, pollution problem of the Silk Screen-Printing Units of
Serampore has repeatedly been referred both in the State Assembly and the Parliament.
Accordingly, Central Pollution Control Board has undertaken a survey of
the Silk Screen-Printing Units of Serampore to assess the status.
I acknowledge
the sincere efforts of the team of CPCB Zonal Office Kolkata led by Sri B.R.Naidu,
SEE and Sri Abhijit Chattopadhyay, EE for this study to asses the scenario. The
specific action point recommendation would help in solving the problem to a great
extent.
