Among the freshwater resources, the rivers are most important.in our country, these rivers are considered as holy, sacred and intermingled with culture and tradition. But, our rivers are being polluted, due to over exploitation of the water supplemented with dumping of all sorts of polluting materials into the river courses.

The Central Pollution Control Board has always put the river water pollution control on the top priority .The Ganga Action Plan, the Yamuna Action Plan and more recently the National River Conservation Plan, are based on studies carried out by CPCB.CPCB is co- ordinating the project on monitoring network on rivers and evolving new strategies to study and combat the river water pollution.

In the issue of PARIVESH, CPCB's role in river water pollution control is dealt at length alongwith the potentials and problems of Indian rivers and gainful utilisation of the municipal sewage . All the information are compiled and collated by my colleague, Mahendra Pandey.
