EDITORIAL

Groundwater is a precious natural resource. With unabated exploitation and with little option available for cost effective remediation; depletion and deterioration of groundwater quality have become a major issue of national concern.

The present issue of 'Parivesh' is an attempt to have a comprehensive scenario about groundwater, to promote better appreciation of the concept of sustainability and pool our efforts in conserving groundwater resources of our country.

The co-operation extended by various institutions including Central Ground Water Board, National Institute of Hydrology, Geological Survey of India, is gratefully acknowledged.

I am thankful to my colleagues Dr. B.Sengupta, Mrs. Mita Sharma, Sh B.P.Shukla and Sh. R.K.Singh for compiling and collating information for this issue. We hope , the information contained in the news letter will be useful to all concerned.
