Air Quality Status and Trends in Delhi Metropolitan City (1989-93) |
| Foreword
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has set up a network for monitoring
of air quality in all major cities including the metropolitan city of Delhi. Systematic
air quality monitoring studies have been regularly carried out in Delhi since
1987 and the findings have been published in the annual Air Quality Statistics.
The present report contains the data concerning the status and trends of air quality
in Delhi during the period 1989 to 1993. The ambient quality standards were revised
in 1994. Another report for the period 1994-96 depicting the trends of air quality
vis-a-vis standards will follow.
The increasing trends of sulphur dioxide,
nitrogen dioxide and consistently higher values of suspended particulate matter
(SPM) violating the prescribed permissible limits indicate the gravity of air
pollution problem in the megacity. It demands suitable strategies and strict measures.
