National Ambient Air Quality Statistics of India 1993, 1994

                                             Foreword

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) initiated National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (NAAQM) programme in 1984. Over the years, number of monitoring stations has increased to 290, covering 92 Cities/Towns in 28 State/Union Territories. Monitoring is conducted by the respective State Boards and a- computer network has been established for transmittal of data. After collating and processing the data, Air Quality Statistics and Status Reports are brought out by CPCB for dissemination.

The present report gives the air quality status in various Cities/Towns in addition to air quality statistics for the period 1993 and 1994. In this report, an attempt is made to define air quality status as low, moderate, high and critical based on the concentration of pollutants vis-a-vis notified standards. The air quality status in monitored cities/towns is depicted in Table 2.1 of Chapter II and at the individual locations under section 3 * 2 of each State in Chapter III. .

The cooperation of the State Pollution Control Boards in the air quality monitoring programme is gratefully
acknowledged. We hope, this report will be useful to all those concerned with air quality management in the country .
