National Ambient Air Quality Statistics of India 1990

                                                Foreword

The main function of the Central Pollution Control 3oard (CPCB) under the Air (Prevention & contrdl of pollution) Act, 1981 is to improve the quality of air and to revent, control and abate air pollution in the country. knowledge of the current status of ambient air quality is essential for effective planning and implementation of :ontrol progranunes. Accordingly CPCB initiated establishing national Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (NAAQM) network since 1984, which by March, 1991 covered 260 staions spread over 75 cities/towns in 17 states and 4 union territories. Monitoring is conducted by the respective state Boards and it takes 2 to 3 months for the data to reach the Central Board. To keep upto date information efforts are being made to quicken the process of data flow. As a first step, the data flow through floppies has been initiated. Subsequently the State BoardL will be connected to Central Board through on-line network NICNET of National Informatics Centre. I hope, with the establishment of on-line network, upto date information of all the monitoring locations will be available with the Central Board.
The present report covering the data of 1990 is the second in the series on Annual statistics of Ambient Air Quality. These documents are meant to disseminate the Ambient Air Quality data to the public. The active participation of the State Pollution Control Boards in the .. NAAQM programme 1S gratefully acknowledged. It 1S hoped that this report will be useful to all those concerned with air quality management in the country.
