Ambient Air Quality Status of Some Cities/Towns in India

                                                Foreword

Monitoring of air quality of various cities/towns is one of the major activities of the Pollution Control Boards under the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act 1981. Accordingly the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) launched the National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (NAAQM) programme in 1984-85 with seven stations at Agra and Annapara. The NAAQM network will cover 256 locations spread over 17 States and 4 Union Territories by March 1991.

The current report gives the status of air quality of the towns covered under NAAQM for the period 1987-1989. The statistically processed data pertaining to this period has already been brought out separately as a CPCB's report, NAAQMS/l/1990-91.
In Chapter I of this report is presented an introduction to the programme, in Chapter II the findings, in Chapter III details of the NAAQM network and in Chapter IV the air quality status for the various cities/towns.

The active participation of the State Pollution Control Boards in the NAAQM programme is gratefully acknowledged

It is hoped that this report will be useful in formulating air quality management plan in the cities where the quality is poor and in planning for further growth in industries.
