National Ambient Air Quality Statistics of India 1987-89

                                                Foreword

Under the Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act 1981. The Pollution Control Boards monitor, control and abate air pollution in the country. Air pollution control ~ctivities at the Central Pollution Control Board was started as early as 1979 in Agra to safeguard the national monument 'Tajmahal' from air pollution, even before the enactment of the Air Act. Planned air monitoring activities under the National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring (NAAQM) Programme were initiated in 1985 wi.th the setting up of a few stations in Agra and Annapara in the state of Ut tar Pradesh. More stations were progressively established over the years and at present the NAAQM network consist of 220 stations and the target is to reach the number of 600 stations by the end ot 8th five year plan.

The present report is the first attempt to systematically process the data generated during 1987 to 1989 by NAAQM stations. The stations are being operated by the concerned State Pollution Control Boards and their active participation in the NAAQM programme is gratefully acknowledged.
It is hoped that the report will be uscful to all those concerned with air quality in the country.

The co-operation of SPCBs in the water quality monitoring programme is acknowledged. We hope, the report will be useful to all those concerned with water quality management in the country
