Water Quality Statistics of India 1992

                                               Foreword
The Pollution Control Boards have been assigned the tasks for prevention and control of water pollution and for maintaining or restoring the wholesomeness of water. One of the pre-requisites for such functions is monitoring of water quality to ascertain its status and trends. With this in view, a network of 480 monitoring stations has been set up over the years. Various river stretches, lakes and some groundwater sources are included in this network. The stations are operated by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs).

To expedite the process of data transmission, computerised facilities have been progressively introduced. So far, the Central Board and 18 State Boards are interconnected through NICNET and SIRNET ..

The present report is based on collation and analysis of water quality data collected from various stations during 1992. This is the fifth in the series of annual statistical data of water quality. In addition to the statistical analysis of data, the report contains a summary statement (Table 2.2) relating to the desired and existing water quality levels atvarious monitoring stations with specific reference to the critical parameters. .

We hope, the data contained in this report will be useful to the regulatory agencies, entrepreneurs, researchers, planners and others concerned with water quality management. .
