Water Quality Statistics of India 1990

                                               Foreword
Assessment of the status of water quality of the natural water bodies is one of the most important activities of the Pollution Control Boards. Water quality data not only help to ascertain the nature and extent of the requirement for pollution control measures but also the impact on water quality of any control measures taken. accordingly, a water quality monitoring network of 450 stations has been systematically established covering rivers, lakes and a few ground water station.Water quality data thus generated has been treated statistically for meaningful inferences.

For quick transfer of data between Central and State Pollution Control Boards, compatible computer systems have been established. On persuation and training nine State BOards have started sending the water and air quality data on floppies. To further curtail the gap a~ on-line network POLLCON of Pollution Control Boards through NICNET of National

Informatics Centre (NIC) is being established. On experimental basis successful transmission of water and air quality monitoring data through NICNET was done from NIC State Centres at Shimla, Bhopal and Chandigarh. To transmit data directly from State Boards, the State Boards need be connected to the respective NIC State/District Centres through dial-up facility.

The present report covering water quality data of 1990 is the third in the series on Annual statistics of Water Quality. rhese documents are prepared to disseminate the water quality jata to the public. The active participation of the State Pollution Control Boards in the Water Quality Programmes is ;ratefully acknowledged. It is hoped that this report will be ~seful to all those concerned with water quality management in the country.
