Foreword
Since 1977, the Central Pollution Control Board has been monitoring
the quality of surface water and to a very limited extent the quality
of ground water. Before the end of year 1989-90, the monitoring
network has been expanded to 400 stations. Data generated from these
monitoring stations are stored in personal computers.
This document contains annual water quality statistics
for the period 1979 to 1987. The statistical parameters considered
in the document are minimum, maximum, mean and standard deviation
for 19 physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters. Percent
violations over the standards are presented in respect of the four
primary water quality criteria parameters of Bio-Chemical Oxygen
Demand, Dissolved Oxygen, Hydrogen Ion Concentration and total coliforms
for those stations that are located in the river stretches used
for obtaining drinking water or for bathing. A detailed interpretative
report is being published separately.
