Water Quality Status And Statistics (2000)

                                               Foreword

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) is monitoring the water quality at 510 sites in different parts of the country. The monitoring sites are location the major rivers, medium and minor rivers, lakes, canals, creeks, ponds, drains, tanks and ground-water resources. Monitoring is conducted by respective State Pollution Control Boards on monthly or quarterly basis except on yearly basis at 3 locations of Gangotri, Yamunotri and Hanumanchatti of Ganga Basin. The data are transmitted by State Pollution Control Boards through a computerised network and data sheets. After collating and processing the data, CPCB brings out reports on Water Quality Status and Statistics on yearly basis for dissemination of information. Water quality status vis-a-vis standards at individual sites indicating critical parameters (in case of deterioration) is also updated regularly on CPCB's web site.

The present report is the eleventh of the series on Water Quality Monitoring Statistics. The present report gives the water quality status and statistics of various rivers, lakes, canals, creeks, ponds, tanks and wells for the year 2000. The water quality profiles alongwith findings of 14 major rivers have been presented in Chapter 2 and Water Quality Status vis-a-vis standards at the individual sites indicating crititcal parameters ( in case of deterioration) is provided for each riverine system in Chapter 3, for lakes, canals, creeks, ponds, drains & tanks in Chapter 4 and for wells in Chapter 5.

We hope, the report will be useful to all concerned with water quality management in the country.
