Water Quality Statistics of India 1996

                                                Foreword
The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) is monitoring the water quality at 480 sites. The monitoring sites are spread over all the major rivers, some medium and minor rivers, lakes, canals, creeks and groundwater resources. Monitoring is conducted on monthly or quarterly basis by respective State Boards and a computer network has been established for transmittal of data. After collating and processing the data, CPCB brings out Water Quality Statistics and Status Reports on yearly basis for dissemination of information.

The present report gives the water quality status and statistics of various rivers, lakes, canals, creeks and wells for the year 1995. The water quality profiles of the 11 major rivers have been presented in Chapter 2, Water Quali~ Status vis-a-vis standards at the individual sites under sub-section

3.*.3 ofeach riverine system in Chapter 3 and the Water Quality Trends of major rivers for those stations which have atleast 5 years continuous data under sub-sections 3.*.4 in Chapter 3.

The co-operation of State Pollution Control Boards in the water quali~ monitoring programme is greatfully acknowledged. We hope, this report will be useful to all those concerned with water quality management in the country
