Foreword
To ascertain the status and trends of water quality in the inland
water bodies, the Central Pollution Control Board (CP,CB) in collaboration
with the State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) launched a programme
on Monitoring of Indian National Aquatic Resources (MINARS). Under
this programme, so far 480 sites have been selected. These include
the major rivers, medium and minor rivers, lakes, canals, creeks
and ground water resources. Monitoring is conducted by respective
SPCBs and a computer network has been established for transmittal
of data, After collating and processing of data, CPCB brings out
Water Quality Statistics and Status Reports on yearly basis.
The present report entails the water quality status and statistics
based on monitoring data of 1993 and 1994 respectively. The water
quality profiles of
the 12.major rivers have been presented in Chapter 2 and Water Quality
