Specifications for Instruments/Equipments Required for Biomonitoring of Inland Surface Wasters

                                              Foreword
Biomonitoring is an emerging technique to assess water quality status of rivers, lakes and coastal waters. To initiate biomonitoring activity in Pollution Control Boards the necessary sampling and analysis facilities are required to be set up. This requires an upto date knowledge of the availability of relevant instruments/ equipment. Therefore, the need for a compilation of such details was felt. Accordingly a systematic exercise was undertaken in the Central Pollution Control$iBoard to collect, review and compile the available information pertaining to the instruments/ equipment required for collection and analysis of samples for biomonitoring parameters. The present report includes identification of the instruments/equipment required, suggested specifications for them and the lists of manufacturers / suppliers.

Dr. D. de Zwart, short term consultant from Netherlands to the Central Board under the Indo-Dutch Programme and Mr. J. Biener, long term consultant

from Germany under the Indo-German Programme, provided useful suggestions in the preparation of the specifications included in this document, for which I am grateful, Thanks are also due to Dr. R.C. Trivedi of the Central Board for his help in the preparation of the report.

It is hoped that the document would be useful to the personnel of Pollution Control Boards as well as other laboratories involved in biomonitoring of inland surface waters.
