Foreword

In accordance with the Bio-medical Waste (Management & Handling) Rules, 1998, the health care facilities are required to take necessary measures for proper segregation, handling and disposal of infectious wastes. It is therefore necessary for the concerned authorities and personnel in the health care facilities to be fully acquainted with the methods and technologies for bio-medical waste management.

This manual provides relevant information on waste characterisation, segregation, storage and treatment technologies. The safeguards, which are required for operation and maintenance of incinerators, are explained. Suggestions in regard to common facilities t0 bio-medical waste treatment are also provided in this manual.
