Technologies - Issue and Options
|
| Foreword With
increasing trends in population growth and industrialilation wastes and pollutants
are released than the earth can absorb them, and natural resources are consumed
faster than they can be restored. If sustJlinable development is to be achieved,
production processess, and services have to be reoriented towards new patterns,
in order to alleviate environmental stress and to achieve sustJlinable industrial
productivity . A major achievement of the Rio Summit was the realilation
that environment and development are inseparable, and that industry is an important
contributor to development. The need for preventive approaches to industrial pollution
has been recognised, and cleaner production is now seen as one of the control
tools for industry to achieve environmental improvements while remaining competitive
and profitable. . |
| In
our country, most of the industries still rely on the end-of-pipe treatment of
wastes, which is largely attributable to the inadequate knowledge of the benefits
from cleaner production options. An attempt has been made by my colleages, Dr.
D. C. Sharma and Shri Mahendra Pandey to compile the relevant issues and options
in this booklet,
We
hope, the concerned industry , R & D organisations and consulatants will find
this booklet useful in propagating the message of cleaner technologies for pollution
prevention. |
