STUDIES ON 'THE SUNDERBANS'

The Sundarbans, a recognised World Heritage site, support a unique mangrove ecosystem and habitat for a large variety of fauna including robust crocodiles and giant mammals, 'the Royal Bengal Tiger'. With the objectives to develop Geographical Information System on this critical habitat for better management practices, a comprehensive study, encompassing physical, chemical, geological and biological (including bacteriology) parameters has been carried out at over fifteen stations in Sundarbans. The data/information on land use pattern, demography, socio-economic information, coastal hazards including meteorological condition have been incorporated in the study report.
