IMPACT OF FISH DRYING ACTIVITIES

The Central Pollution Control Board pursuant to the order of the Hon'ble Supreme Court in the matter of Writ Petition No. 26/98 inspected the city of Porbandar and studied aspects of sanitation, fish drying activities and subsequently derived short-term and long-term measures to be taken to upgrade the sanitation and hygiene around the Gandhi memorial in the city of Porbandar. The specific aspects dealt in this case are regarding the process of fish catching and drying. It has been observed that the juvenile fish (smaller in size) are separated by netting and sun dried. The biological/ bacterial decomposition of these rejects. The study team explored options for relocating the fish loading/unloading area & the area for fish drying, and also referred chemicals, which prevent the odour. The Hon'ble court took-up the matter for hearing and several appropriate direction to ameliorate the hygiene at the birth place of the Father of the Nation.
