Standards/Guidelines notified/revised during 2003
Revised noise limits for Diesel Generator sets earlier notified, vide GSR 371(E), May 17, 2002, was amended vide GSR 520(E), July 1, 2003. The regulation requires mandatory provision of acoustic enclosure, at the manufacturing stage, for all new generator sets run on diesel (upto 1000 KVA), effective from July 1, 2004. The maximum permissible sound pressure level for new generator sets (upto 1000 KVA) run on diesel, according to this new regulation shall be 75 dB(A) at 1 m from the enclosure surface.
For diesel generator sets, not covered by the above, the noise level from the Diesel Generator set shall be controlled by providing an acoustic enclosure or acoustic treatment of the room for DG sets. Such acoustic enclosures/acoustically treated rooms, shall be designed for minimum 25 dB(A) insertion loss or for meeting the ambient noise standards, whichever is on higher side.
Compliance Testing of Fire-crackers
Compliance testing of fire-crackers for noise standards, was carried out during March-April, 2003, in association with the National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. The objective of the project was to study whether the noise level of fire-crackers available in the market meet the prescribed noise limits. The test results of the present study indicates that 92% of the samples exceed the prescribed limits. Similar tests were conducted during previous years. Based on the results, CPCB has already requested the Ministry of Environment & Forests, to initiate steps to stop manufacture of those crackers exceeding the prescribed noise limits.
Compliance Procedure for Noise Limits for Generator Sets
Compliance procedure for noise limits for generator sets (upto 1000 KVA) run on diesel has been finalised and circulated to the concerned testing agencies.
