Inventorisation of Hazardous Waste Generation in Kerala State

                                                Foreword

The Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India has promulgated Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. According to these rules, the State regulatory authorities are required to issue authorization to the generator/facility for the collection, reception, treatment, storage find disposal of hazardous wastes. The State Governments are also required to identifiy disposal sites and to conduct environmental impact assessment for disposal of hazardous wastes.

To provide teclmical assistance and information as needed for implementation of the rules, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has taken up a programme for inventorization of hazardous wastes in various States of the country. The present report relates to such a study
conducted in the State of Kerala. The report brings out identification and quantification of different categories of hazardous wastes, existing hazardous waste management practices, inventory of the existing dump site and strategy for hazardous waste management.

My colleagues Dr. Inamul Haq, Sr. Scientist, Sh. N.K. Verma, Addl. Director and Dr. S.P. Chakrabarti, Member Secretary were responsible for coordination, evaluation and finalization of the project report. They were assisted by Shri 5.5. Pal, SSA and Shri K.P. Rathi. The contribution of Dr. S.K. Gupta and Dr. K.R. Ranganathan of I.I.T, Mumbai and co-operation by Sh. Indu lal, SEE, Kerala State Pollution Control Board during the work is gratefully acknowledged.
