Report on Inventorisation of Hazardous Waste Generation in
Jammu & Kashmir State (Jammu Province)

                                                Foreword

The Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, has promulgated Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. According to these rules, the State re9ulatory authorities are required to issue authorization to the generator/facility for the collection, reception, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous wastes. The state Governments are also required to identify disposal sites and to conduct environmental impact assessment for disposal of hazardous wastes.

To provide technical assistance and information as needed for implementation of the rules, the Central Pollution Control Board has taken up a programme qor inventorization of hazardous wastes generated in various States of the country. The present report relates to a study
conducted in the Jammu Province of Jammu & Kashmir State. The report brings out information based on identification and quantification of different categories of hazardous wastes, existing hazardous waste management practices and strategy for hazardous waste management for Jammu Province
