Management of Hazardous Waste - Guidelines For Proper Functioning And Upkeep Of Disposal Sites

                                                    Foreword

Hazardous waste generated due to industrial and other activities are required to be properly disposed of, in case the same cannot be recycled or reused. The facility for hazardous waste disposal may comprise secure landfill with or without treatment facility or may be integrated one laving incineration facility as well. Disposal of hazardous wastes has to be done in a manner :hat does not pollute air, water & soil and does not cause any harm to human beings and habitat in the surroundings, during operative period and also after closure.

Necessity of having guidelines for proper functioning and upkeep   of   disposal sites   was   felt.  Accordingly, Dr. D. B.

Boralkar, Senior Scientist in CPCB, presently on deputation as Member Secretary, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, and Sh Tishya Chatterjee, former Member Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board, prepared the draft guidelines. Dr. B. Sengupta, Member Secretary, CPCB reviewed the draft document before wide circulation among the concerned agencies. Comments/suggestions for improvement were invited from concerned organizations.

The present document is the finalized version after incorporating the suggestions and comments received from various agencies. Contributions made by Dr. D.B. Boralkar, Shri Tishya Chatterjee, and Dr. B. Sengupta, in preparation of the draft document are gratefully acknowledged. Dr. S.P. Chakrabarti, Former Member Secretary, CPCB, in association with Shri N.K. Verma, Additional Director and Shri J. Chandra Babu, A.E.E., CPCB, finalized the report.

The operators of disposal sites are expected to follow these guidelines and State Pollution Control Boards/Pollution Control Committees in U. T. are required to ensure their compliance.
