Foreword

Solid Waste Management is one of the essential services to be provided by municipality to the community. This is an important activity which needs to be planned and executed in an appropriate manner to maintain clean environment.

In keeping with the guidelines formulated by the Committee appointed by the Honorable Suprement Court of India on "Solid Waste Management in Class i Cities in India" and regulations promulgated by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India a study was undertaken through NEERI to assess the problem of disposal of solid waste by landfilling and develop guidelines for selection of sites for developing sanitary landfilling.
