Development of Site Selection Methodology for Landfilling
A Case Study for Banglore

                                               Foreword

Solid Waste Management is one of the essential services which are required to be provided by the municipal authorities. This is a vital activity which needs to be planned and executed in an appropriate manner to maintain clean environment.

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), has taken initiatives on various aspects relating to Solid Waste Management for tendering technical assistance to the local bodies. One such initiative relates to assessment of solid waste disposal in landfills and development of criteria for site selection. With this objective , CPCB through the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) Nagpur instituted a study at Bangalore.
NEERI has developed exhaustive user-friendly criteria for selection of landfill site, in the form of 33 attributes addressing the issues related to receptor, environmental condition, accessibility, socio-economic aspects, waste management practices, climatological and geological features. The criteria have been validated for the city of Bangalore in collaboration with the Bangalore Municipal Corporation. We hope, the findings of the study will be useful for the municipalities for selection of landfill sites.
