Inventorisation and Management of Hazardous Waste Generation in
West Bengal

                                               Foreword

The Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India, has promulgated Hazardous Waste ( Management and Handling )Rules, 1989 undet the Environmental (Protection) Act, 1986 and subsequently ammended the Rules in January, 2000. According to these Rules, the State regulatory authorities are required to issue the authorization to the generators, occupiers of the facilities for collection, reception, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous wastes. In order to provide technical assistance and information needed for implementation of the Rules, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB has taken up a programme for inventorisation and management of hazardous waste in various States in the country.


This report entails information on hazardous waste generating units, quantity of wastes generated, present hazardous waste management practices and proposed hazardous waste management plant for the State of West Bengal. We Hope, the report will be useful to all concerned with hazardous waste management.
