Processing of the Workshop on Environmental Risk Analysis due to Storage and Handling of Hazardous Chemicals

                                                Foreword

Industrial operations involved in the manufacture and storage of hazardous chemicals entail inherent risk potential to human safety, health, property and surrounding environs. Hence, it is imperative that the risk should be scientifically analysed so that mitigation measures could be implemented and emergency response plans pre~ared.

Though legislation exists in the country for the management of hazardous substances as also for environmental appraisal of industrial projects, requisite guidelines for risk analysis are not yet available, particularly in regard to consequence modelling for calculation of safe distances and acceptable risk criteria for cut-off activities. The Environmental Monitoring Training & Research Centre (EMTRC) along with the Central Pollution Control

Board (CPCB) organised a Workshop on Environmental Risk Analysis due to Storage and Handling of Hazardous Chemi9als during September 21-22, 2000 where experts from different disciplines interacted and discussed the relevant issues in regard to the principles and practices of risk analysis

I appreciate the Initiatives taken by EMTRC in organising the brain storming event and collation of useful inputs as contained in this document. I hope, the contents of this document will be useful in developing the much-needed guidelines for conducting environmental risk analysis and for environmental appraisal of .
