Inventorisation & Management of Hazardous Waste
In National Capital Region

                                               Foreword

The Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India has promulgated Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1989 under the Environment (protection) Act, 1986. According to these rules, the State regulatory authorities are required to issue authorization to the generator/facility for the collection, reception, treatment, storage and disposal of hazardous wastes. The State Governments are also required to identify disposal sites and to conduct environmental impact assessment for disposal of hazardous wastes.

To provide technical assistance and information as needed for implementation of the rules, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has taken up a programme for inventorization of hazardous wastes in various States of the country. The present report relates to such a study conducted in the National Capital Region (NCR) covering districts of Noida, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, Meerut and Faridabad.1'he report brings out identification of hazardous waste generating units, quantification of different categories of hazardol.l" wastes, existing hazardous waste management practices and proposed hazardous waste management plan in these districts.


The report is the out come of concerted efforts of my colleagues,Dr. Inamul Haq, Sh. N.K. Verma and Dr. S.P. Chakrabarti, and the National Productivity Council, New Delhi. M/ s. Tata Risk Management Services contributed towards primary data collection for the project. The help received from the Regional Offices of U.P. and Haryana Pollution Control Boards in collating relevant information is gratefully acknowledged. Sh.S.S. Pal and Sh. K.P. Rathi provided necessary data compilation and secretarial assistance.
