Water Quality of Flood Affected Areas of Delhi 1995
|
| Foreword
Every year, monsoon brings flood situation in the river system. At times, it leads
to severe damage to physical structures, life, crops as well as to environment.
One such impact is the contamination of surface aDd underground water bodies in
terms of excess levels of physico-chemical, bacteriological, heavy metals and
pesticides characteristics due to mixing of waste water and solid waste with flood
water. Next to rivers, the main source of drinking water is the ground water,
which is easy to abstract anywhere and anytime unlike rivers. It is, therefore,
imperative to safeguard the ground water from every source of contamination. In
Delhi, after 1978, there was another heavy flood during the monsoon period in
1995. An attempt has been made to assess the impact of the flood on the quality
of ground water in flood affected areas in Delhi. The findings of the study are
presented in this report. | |
