Groundwater Quality in Problem Areas - A Status Report (Part-V)

                                                Foreword

Hitherto, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has been mostly involved in surface water quality monitoring. The first major assignment in Groundwater Quality Monitoring was undertaken by CPCB in January, 1994 through a special grant provided by the Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India.

The present report covers the groundwater survey conducted by Orissa Lift Irrigation Corporation, Bhubaneshwar in assessing the contamination of groundwater resources arising out of industrial activities in the Angul-Talcher. area in Orissa. The finding and recommendations pertain to the data collected during the period April 1994 to May 1995.

The project was co-ordinated by my colleague Smt. Mita Sharma, Environmental Engineer under the supervision of a core team
consisting of Shri S. Mukherjee, Director, Pollution Control Directorate ( Central Ground Water Board, Lucknow), Shri T. Venugopal, Dr. R.N. Bhattacharya, Dr. R.C. Trivedi and Dr. S.P. Chakrabarti of the Central Board.

We hope, this document will be useful to all the concerned agencies including the Pollution Control Boards and planning

Dilip Biswas
Chairman, CPCB
