Foreword
Shri N. Raghu
Babu, Environmental Engineer and Shri J.S.R.K. Sastry, Project Associate
contributed to preparation of this Manual based on their experience
in computerising the maps of a number of Districts during the first
phase of the project.
We hope, all those working on Zoning Atlas will find this document
handy and useful in preparation of the thematic maps as well as planning
and execution of the project.
A document on 'Zoning Atlas for Siting of Industries, based on. environmental
considerations -The Conceptual Framework' (EMAPS/l/1996-97), that
provides guidelines for the preparation of the District-wise Zoning
Atlas was earlier brought out. Subsequently, the need for a manual
that provides working guidelines for preparation of maps manually
and using Geographic IMormation System (GIS) was felt and accordingly
the present document has been prepared.

| Recognising
the significance for sitin.9 of industry; in environmentally acceptable
locations, the Central Pollution Control Board along with the State
Pollution Control Boards have taken up preparation of District-wise
Zoning Atlas for Siting of Industries. In the first phase that took-off
during 1995, 19 Districts in 14 S1ates were Covered. Encouraged by
the response, it is proposed to cover the other priority Districts
in the Country |
