Zoning Atlas - Bankura District (west Bengal)

                                                Foreword

The Central Pollution Control Board introduced an environmental planning programme known as "Zoning Atlas for siting of Industries" in 1995 for identifying and protecting the environmentally sensitive zones and helping in achieving developmental objectives, especially those of industries, in an environmentally acceptable manner. Capacities are being built on various technical aspects related to planning and mapping, on interpretation of data/maps/information for decision making purposes, on GIS, remote sensing applications, modelling, etc. as well as on xhe application/usage of the results generated under the programme. The programme is a part of the World Bank funded Environmental Management Capacity Building Project and the GTZ (German Agency for Technical Co-operation) supported "CPCB/SPCBs Environmental Quality Assessment & Control"
.

For the State of West Bengal, Bankura District was taken up by the West Bengal State Council of Science & Technology, Calcutta as a part of the pilot phase in 1995 with the technical support form CPCB and GTZ. Although, the Atlas for this District was made available for official use much earlier, owing to certain technical problems, this could not be published for public use. Through constant R&D efforts and with the support of GTZ, CPCB has now worked out GIS solutions for speeding up printing of the Atlases. The present Atlas is one of the first outputs of these efforts.

We hope, this Atlas will help the industrial entrepreneurs and the Government agencies in proper siting of industrial units.
