Health Status of Conservancy Staff and Other Community Associated With Municipal Solid Wastes Management in Kolkata and Chennai

 Foreword

By-and-large, it has been an age-old practice to handle municipal solid waste by manual means. At different stages of waste handling such as waste collection, street sweeping, transfer of waste from bins to transport vehicles/carts and at disposal sites, the waste is handled manually. Ragpickers and people living around landfill sites are also exposed to hazards. In order to consider routine health check-up programme and phase out manual handling of waste, Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) instituted studies on impact of municipal solid waste handling on conservancy staff, ragpickers and on habitation around landfill sites at Kolkata and Chennai. The study at Kolkata and study at Chennai was carried out by Shri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute,Chennai. We are thankful to these Institutes for completing the study.

The present report regarding Kolkata and Chennai are indicative. It is proposed that local bodies should gradually   introduce   mechanization/automation in handling of MSW so that health risk
are minimized. On behalf of CPCB the study was co-ordinated by Dr. B. Sengupta, Member Secretary, Dr. A.B. Akolkar, Additional Director and Sh. A.K. Vidyarthi, AEE.
