A Report on State of Environment Lucknow

                                                Foreword

Lucknow, the Capital of Uttar Pradesh, located along the banks of river Gomti, is a historical city with rich cultural heritage. Alongside, the city has served as a commercial, industrial and tourism centre of northern India. Over the years, the city has been subjected to unintended growth due to increasing population without commensurate development of basic civic amenities. This has resulted in lowering the quality of life and consequently the `State of Environment ` of the city is also adversely affected. The symptoms of strain on the environmental quality are evinced in several parts of the City.

The Central Pollution Control Board conducted in-depth studies to identify the causes and consequences of the degraded environmental conditions of the City. Based on the observations made during the studies , the measures for prevention and control of pollution have also been recognized.

I am grateful to my colleagues Sh. N.K. Gupta , Sh. B.P. Shukla and Dr. B. Sengupta for their efforts towards preparation of this report. The cooperation extended by the U.P. Pollution Control Board and other Central and State Government Organizations viz. UP Jal Nigam { Gomti Pollution Control Unit } , India Meteorological Department , Central Ground Water Board , Town & Country Planning Department , Lucknow Development Authority , Department of Tourism, Uttar Pradesh, Department of Statistics, RTO, Indian Oil Corporation, Lucknow Jal Sansthan, Lucknow Nagar Nigam , Doctors and Medical Associations of Lucknow, Department of Forests and Sulabh International, are gratefully acknowledged.

We hope, this report will be useful for the regulatory authorities , policy makers, town planners and other agencies concerned with the environmental management of Lucknow and other similar cities of the country.
