Foreword
One of the functions of the State Pollution Control Boards constituted under the provisions of Section 17 (f) of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 is "To inspect sewage or trade effluents, works andp/ants for the treatment of sewage and trade effluents and to reviewp/ans, specifications or other data re/ating top/ants set up for the treatment of water, works for the purification thereof and the systemjor the disposa/ of sewage or trade effluents or in ccn~ection with the grant of any consent as required by this Act', In order to translate this mandate into practice, the Central Pollution Control Board ha3 surveyed and published various doc11ments under the Control of Urban Pollution Series (CUPS).

The present document is based on micro-level in-depth study in the Trans- Yamuna area of the National Capital Territory ofDelhi. A team of the technical and scientifi( Jfficials of the Central

Pollution Control Board under the leadership of Sh. N.K. Verma, Additional Director and Dr. D.D. Basu, Senior Scientist conducted 'the study.
