Foreword
The
Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had prepared reports on the
status of wastewater generation, collection. treatment and disposal
in Class I cities and Class II towns in 1978-79. Subsequently, it
was updated in 1989-90. This is the third in the series of updated
information being brought out by CPCB.
As
the number of metrocities has increased from 12 in 1981 to 23 in
1991. it Is imperative to study the growing need for water supply
and upkeep of sanitation in the metrocities. This document highlights
the status of water supply, wastewater generation, collection. treatment
and disposal ;!1 the above mentioned metrocities of the country.
Further, an attempt has been made to analyse the economic value
of treated sewage in terms of its use as nutrient-rich water,
This work wos executed for CPCB by the Environment Protection, Training
and Research Institute (EPTRi). Hyderat:ad. The co-operation rendered
by municipalities, State Governments. public health engineering
departments and state pollution control boards by providing data/information
is gratefully acknowledged. We hope, the report will be useful to
all those involved in the Improvememt of urban environmental quality.
