Foreword
The present document is an attempt towards understanding the problems relating to urban solid waste management and searching for viable techno-economic solutions to be adopted for future management. It has been realised that Authorities concerned though have put-up commendable efforts to check menace of the ever-growing problem of solid waste disposal, the realisation for recycling / recovery of resources of waste is a recent awakening in the event of high cost of land and dwindling sites for land-fill in urban areas specially in the metropolitan areas. In this document, technologi- cal options available and important aspects\socio-economic} are touched upon in brief. Central Pollution Control Board has undertaken the task of collating all available information pertaining to the 23 metro-cities in the first instance, reviewing emerging technologies and looking forward to their effective application in near future in associa- tion with the conserted effort of all concerned Government and non-Government organizations in the Country .
