Sunderbans Report

                                                Foreword

The Sundarbans mangrove ecosystem, recognised as world's one of the important heritage sites, is unique of its kind holding largest single mangrove block in the globe. It is an excellent habitat comprising both terrestrial and aquatic space that harbours a diverse variety of flora and fauna. The ecosystem is of great significance for its ecological and socio-economic importance. The Indian part of Sundarbans in the lower Bengal holds about 50% of the total mangrove reserves in India.

The total mangrove forest area in Sundarbans of West Bengal is 4263 sq km having a core area with dense vegetation covering about I 692 sq km which is designated as reserve forest and protective. shelter of the Royal Bengal Tiger.
A comprehensive study of the environmental status and statistics of this unique habitat was undertaken by the Central Board's Eastern Zonal Office at Kolkatta under a World Bank aided project supported present report contains information on various aspects viz. qeomorphology, Land use, Infrastructure, Industry, Floral and Faunal reserves as also environmental problems and recommendations for sustainable management of the ecosystem
