Hydrobiological Survey to Study the Impacts of a Ship Wreck (M.S. Green Opal) in the Hugli River (a case study)

                                                Foreword

Environmental surveillance is an essential pre-requisite for pollution control. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) carries out periodic monitoring in surface waters, ambient air, coastal waters, besides noise, groundwater and bio- monitoring. CPCB also monitors environmental impacts and episodal pollution caused by accidental discharge of pollutants from different sources including oil spills. Cases of oil spills arising out of ships getting wrecked in the high seas have been on the rise around the world and this has drawn flak from the environmentalists due to the extensive damage caused to the marine fauna.

The Zonal Office, Calcutta under the supervision of Dr. R. N. Bhattacharyya conducted a survey from June 21-27, 1997 following a Korean cargo ship "M.S. Green Opal" carrying steel sinking on 19th June 1997.near Birlapur
Jute Jetty in the inter-tidal zone of river Hugli. The sediment and water samples collected at that time do confirm that the aquatic fauna was effected.

This report is dedicated to the memory of Prof Amiya Kumar Chakraburtty who passed away on December 17; 1997. Prof Chakraburtty took keen interest in the activities of CPCB and he was always available to offer useful guidance in analytical methods for pollution monitoring.

We hope, this report will serve as a reference document to all concerned with monitoring and control of pollution in marine environment.

Chairman, CPCB
