Foreword
In accordance with the Water (Prevention and Control ofPollution) Act, 1974, the Air (Prevention and Control ofPollution)Act, 1981 and the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, the industrial units are required to comply with the pollufion control standards and to ensure necessary environmental safeguards. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) assist, the industry and the State Pollution Control Roards with the relevant informatioo aod technical ioputs as required for this purpose.

Based on countrywide surveys, comprehensive iodustry specific documents are brought out by CPCB to provide necessary ioformation on the status of the industry, nature and extent of their pollution potential vis-a-v", measures for prevention and control of pollution. The eftluentand emi,sion standards also form a part of these documents. The present document on asbestos products manufacturing industry belongs to the Comprehensive Industry Document Series (COINDS).

Indepth studies ofselected asbestos products manufacturing units were conducted in cooperation with tbe State Pollution Control Boards, industry and the Asbestos Information Centre.
