Comprehensive Industry Document on Spent Pot Lining(SPL) Waste from Aluminium Industry

                                                Foreword
The Central Pollution Control Board has published several Comprehensive Industry Documents on specific industries and related environmental problems. The present dC'cument deals with the problem of Spent Pot Lining (SPL) waste generated from Aluminium Smelters.

S PL waste generated from the smelters, has leachable cyanide and fluoride. This makes it necessary to dispose SPL waste with proper care. As per Hazardous Wastes ( Handling & Management) Rules, 1989, SPL. waste comes under Waste Category No.1. The Manage- ment of SPL waste by various aluminium industries in our country, is indiscriminate, and not environmentally sound. This document is an endeavour to compile and streamline the information available and provide guidelines for environmentally sound management of SPL waste.

The basic groundwork for this report was done by M/s National Productivity Council, Delhi, and co-ordinated by Dr. B. Sengupta, Additional Director and Shri G. K. Mendiratta , Environmental Engineer, Central Pollution Control Board.

We hope the document will be useful to the aluminium industry, regulatory agencies, R & D institutions, consultants and others concerned with the management of hazardous wastes.
